Foundation Focus
Storyville to Hit Milestone:
50,000 Visits
Before the end of 2008, Rosedale Library’s
Storyville will record its
50,000th visitor after officially opening in February of this year.
Storyville has been averaging 6,900 visitors per month and is on track to
welcome its 50,000th visitor toward the end of this year.
Over the past several years, Storyville was the primary project for the
Foundation for BCPL. The foundation’s fund raising efforts were a major
source of financial support in the development and creation of Storyville.

“The community’s overwhelmingly positive response to Storyville has been
gratifying,” noted Foundation for BCPL President Jeff Herschman. “We’re so
pleased that people are as excited about Storyville as we have been. It’s
amazing that we’ll have 50,000 visits in less than a year of operation!”
An interactive early literacy learning center designed specifically for
children ages birth to 5 and their caregivers, Storyville is located in the
Rosedale Library and is open daily during regular library hours.
|
On May 22, the Foundation for Baltimore County Public Library hosted the
fifth annual Retiree Gathering and Luncheon for former library staff
members at the Rosedale Library. Attendees enjoyed reminiscing over
photos, a buffet lunch and a tour of Storyville.

My First Library Card
Baltimore County Public Library designed a special library card for
children birth through kindergarten and worked with the Baltimore County
Public School Library Media Specialists, the Baltimore County Infants
and Toddlers Program and two child care provider groups to distribute
cards to children. The Foundation for Baltimore County Public Library
purchases backpacks that are given to the children the first time they
use the card.

Kudos
BCPL Director Jim Fish has been elected to serve a
three- year term as vice president/president elect of the
Maryland Library
Association, an organization of 1,100 members representing public, academic
and private libraries throughout Maryland.
Three new members were recently appointed by the county
executive to serve on the seven-member Board of Library Trustees, who may
serve two five-year terms. They are Carol Buell, Jeffrey Smith and Henry
Turner. The board officers are Vivian Banks, president; Diane MacDougall,
vice president; Sharon Knecht, secretary; and Frank Regan, treasurer.
Maryland’s Biggest Book Club
Throughout September and October readers all over
Maryland are taking part in the first-ever statewide community reading
program “One Maryland One Book,” a program of the Maryland Humanities
Council coordinated by the Maryland Center for the Book. The book selection,
A Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey from Inner City to the Ivy
League by Washington, D.C.’s Pulitzer Prize-winning author/journalist
Ron Suskind, was chosen to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the
assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. The true story of a teenager growing
up in one of D.C.’s most dangerous neighborhoods and subsequently his
college difficulties is guaranteed to generate important discussions about
inequalities in educational opportunities, race and race relations in
Maryland and America.
