What's Happening @ Your Library in September / October /
November
Let's Celebrate!
Thanksgiving celebrations past and present now go
hand-in-hand with recognition of National American
Indian Heritage Month. It’s a time to give thanks for our blessings. Moreover, it’s an appropriate time for remembering the unique spiritual, artistic and literary contributions and customs of American Indian cultures that enliven and enrich our land.
Baltimore County Public Library branches offer family programs this fall in tribute to Native Americans, who play a vital role in maintaining our nation through participation in military service, law enforcement and business development. Storytelling, dance and music bring to life the heritage and history of the Cherokee, Piscataway, Nanticoke, Pocomoke and numerous other Native Americans, many of them residents of Baltimore and Maryland.
Native American flutist
Eagle Warrior
presents a unique program of his culture, history and tales combined with the haunting sounds of his traditional flute music on
Sunday, November 23 at 2 p.m. at the North Point Library. Eagle Warrior’s live performances and highly acclaimed album of Native American flute music Spirit Tracker have earned bookings for numerous appearances at powwows and other events nationwide.
The Irvine Nature Center gives audiences at six branches a taste of
Maryland’s pre-colonial Native Americans
and their ties to the land. Travel back in time with Native American replica tools, games and activities at the Arbutus, Essex, Hereford,
Perry Hall, Reisterstown or
Rosedale library.
Or spend an entertaining afternoon in Towson, where Keith Colston, dressed in Native American attire, shares the Crow Hop, Snake Dance and Round Dance on
Saturday, October 18 at 2 p.m. Colston has taught and performed his dances internationally.
Native American Dance
is presented by the Friends of the Towson Library.
More Native American dancing is combined with interactive storytelling when
Joseph Stands with Many
shares traditional Cherokee stories for family entertainment, Thursday, November 13 at 7 p.m. at the Catonsville Library. The program is sponsored by
the Friends of the Catonsville Library.

Meet The Authors
Nancy Patz
A hat provided inspiration for the newest of
Nancy Patz’s popular books for children, Who Was the Woman Who Wore the
Hat, based on her memorable and powerful experience as a visitor at the
Jewish Historical Museum in Amsterdam. Patz has won high praise and numerous
awards for her books as well as for her work in schools as an
author/illustrator/lecturer. On Sunday, October 26 at 2 p.m. at
Pikesville, Patz gives one of her lively talks on the hat and the art of
her other picture books, such as Pumpernickel Tickle and Mean Green Cheese
and Moses Supposes His Toeses Are Roses. Book sales and signing.
Refreshments will be served. Sponsored by the Friends of the Pikesville
Library.
Leo Bretholz
At Catonsville, Wednesday, November 5 at 7
p.m. and Cockeysville, Thursday, November 13 at 7 p.m., Leo
Bretholz, author of Leap into Darkness, shares his personal
experiences with the Holocaust, his life on the run and the background of
Kristallnacht (Night of the Broken Glass) during the 65th year anniversary
of the shocking 1938 event. Written together with Sun columnist Michael
Olesker, Bretholz tells the story of a family tragedy and the
seven-year-long story of defiance and triumph that followed the author’s
night-time leap from a German death train into the French countryside. Book
sales and signing.
Alex Hairston
In his sexy, joyful and heartfelt debut novel, Baltimorean author Alex
Hairston describes the life of a "loving" man who meets his soul mate, only
to learn the very hard way that, like the title of his book, "love don’t
come easy." In telling the story Hairston incorporates his own first love,
which is poetry. Meet Hairston and learn how he manages the art of combining
writing with his full-time occupation as a nurse on Monday, November 3 at
7 p.m. at the Randallstown Library.

News
Digest:
"Seeing stars" … at the library was
a sign that BCPL’s 11-week Summer Reading Club activities were in full swing. This year’s theme "Blast Off to Reading" inspired a burst of creative energy
reflected in a plethora of decorative
heavenly bodies, rockets and aliens that occupied space in all the branches. One
of the most prominent additions was the green, one-eyed alien who remained nameless until July, when he was dubbed "Orbit" in a contest. From the start, when County Executive Jim Smith declared Friday, June 6 as Sneaks Day and read
stories to the audience of youngsters, to the Wednesday, June 11 sendoff at the Arbutus Library attended by BCPS officials, library staff, customers and
registrants, and to the weeks that followed, the 18th season for Sneaks as BCPL’s summer reading mascot was bigger
and better than ever.
At the Towson Library, County Executive
Jim Smith launches
Sneaks Day by reading
a book about space.

BCPS Superintendent
Dr. Joe A. Hairston stresses the importance of reading during school night at the Arbutus Library a week before the official kickoff of the Summer Reading Club.
Everyone loves a parade …
A cloudburst failed to dampen
the spirits at Rosedale’s Pedalers Parade in July, when youngsters trimmed their scooters, strollers and bicycles in patriotic colors and proudly circled the parking lot to the tunes of John Philip Sousa.

Eye-Openers …
On Towson Library’s
"skywalk" connection
to the garage you’ll
find authentic
Seattle-style espresso at the new Moss Bay Espresso Cafe, also serving up many other coffee drinks, bakery items and sandwiches every day, including
weekends, during library hours and earlier on weekdays.

Where There's a Will, There's a Way
Americans are among the most
generous people on earth. Over 70 percent of American households contribute to charity each year. Yet many of these same people don’t think about continuing their support of their favorite causes by giving through their will, living trusts or other estate planning instruments. Some folks spend their lives passionately involved in
organizations they believe in, and may find that including those organizations
in their estate plans is the best way
to carry on this lifelong commitment.
Wills, life insurance policies, retirement accounts and other planning vehicles
offer wonderful opportunities for leaving
a lasting legacy to benefit others. Including charitable donations in your estate planning can be a tool for
expressing your beliefs and values,
and for furthering an important cause. Making a planned gift can provide tax
or life income advantages as well.
Do you have a will? Almost 60 percent of Americans do not have wills. Without one, you lose control of how your assets are distributed. Preparing a will is
important, regardless of your age or wealth. Unfortunately, if you die without
a will:
- The laws of your state will determine how your assets will be distributed.
- A court will appoint an administrator for your estate.
- A court will appoint a guardian for your minor children.
- Your assets may not be distributed the way you would like.
- You won’t be able to support your favorite causes or charities.
With a will, you can:
- Decide how your assets will be
distributed.
- Choose a
personal
representative
who will oversee the distribution of your assets.
- Provide for family members and friends who are important to you.
- Provide for minor children, including who will take care of them.
- Avoid unnecessary expense in
administering your estate.
- Utilize estate-planning techniques to reduce your estate taxes and save money.
- Provide for charitable causes that are important to you. Many people choose to support organizations whose work they believe in by including them
in their will. Such gifts are very
meaningful because they allow you
to continue to support causes that are important to you even after death.
Types of bequests:
- Specific bequest – You can indicate
a specific item or dollar amount to
give to a person or organization.
- Percentage bequest – You can
designate that a percentage of your estate or of another asset goes to
a person or organization.
- Residual bequest – You can make a bequest to a person or organization
of all or a portion of the remainder of your estate after other bequests have been distributed and expenses paid.
Naming the Foundation for Baltimore County Public Library as the beneficiary
of a charitable bequest is as simple
as adding a few sentences to your will,
and will make a lasting impact on your community. When you choose the Foundation, you are supporting all
of the great things libraries stand for: knowledge, information, cultural
development, family activities and so much more. Here are examples of the language you can use to benefit the library in your will:
- "I give, devise, and bequeath to the Foundation for Baltimore County Public Library, Inc. of Towson, MD _____%
of my estate."
- "I give, devise, and bequeath to the Foundation for Baltimore County Public Library, Inc. of Towson, MD $_____."
- "I give, devise, and bequeath to the Foundation for Baltimore County Public Library, Inc. of Towson, MD all the rest, residue, and remainder of my estate
after my final expenses and any legal obligations have been settled, and all other specific bequests have been
distributed."
You may designate your gift for a
specific use, although an unrestricted
gift is the most useful because it gives the Foundation the flexibility to respond effectively to the changing needs of the library.
If you plan to include the Foundation in your will, or if you have already done
so, please let us know! This will allow the Foundation to best plan for its
future needs, and will allow us to recognize
you appropriately for your generosity.

Read Rover Plus Update
In September 2001, the
Foundation
for Baltimore County Public Library began a two-year campaign to raise money for
a special children’s bookmobile to serve preschoolers and their caregivers in neighborhoods where reading scores
are consistently below average. As of
July 2003, we had raised almost $185,000 toward the $225,000 needed to fund
the Read Rover Plus. This innovative
bookmobile will provide books and
story times for children, and
training and resource materials
for caregivers.
Contributions from individuals, businesses and corporations are the key to the
success of this project. Have you made your gift to the Read Rover Plus project
yet? We challenge you to share in this exciting opportunity to make a world of
difference in the lives of our children. Mail your donation to:
Foundation for Baltimore County
Public Library
320 York Road
Towson, MD 21204
Or call Lori Ford at 410-887-4474
to use your MasterCard, Visa, Discover,
or American Express.
All contributors will be invited to the
ribbon cutting when the Read Rover Plus hits the road sharing the love of reading with kids who need it the most.
