The Baltimore County Public Library (BCPL) has been serving the suburban community surrounding the city of Baltimore since 1948.  Based in Towson, Maryland, this nationally recognized library system has eighteen branches, almost a half million registered users, and over ten million loans per year.  Check us out and see how you can enjoy one of the best library systems in America!

The Baltimore County Public Library currently has eighteen branches and four bookmobiles (Mobile Library Services) which target outlying communities (especially senior centers and child care facilities). In addition, planning is underway for a new branch in Owings Mills.

The library is a great place to work and we have many opportunities for full time, part-time, and volunteer employment in all of our branches as well as in our administrative offices.

Volunteering at Baltimore County Public Library

 

Volunteers play an important role in our ability to provide library service to our communities. Find out about volunteering and complete the online volunteer application form. The number of volunteer opportunities available are determined by each branch. The minimum age for volunteers is 14 years old or in the 8th grade.  The following exceptions may be made: people under age 14 who volunteer as part of a group, e.g. scout troops, or as part of the Summer Reading Program.

 

Special Volunteers:

 

  • Student volunteers ages 14 and above may receive credit for student learning hours for volunteering throughout the year
     

  • BCPL's Summer Reading Program volunteers must be currently in grades 6-8. They promote the summer-only program within each branch, sign-up children for the program and give out stickers and prizes.

 

Other Special Library Volunteer Progams include:
 

  • The Friends: Branch Support Groups are important volunteer support groups for Baltimore County Public Library. They provide community outreach and advocacy for their neighborhood library. They organize fundraising events and bring additional talent, expertise, and financial support to their community library. For more information or to get involved, contact your local Friends: Branch Support Group.
     

  • Story Timers Early Literacy Volunteer Program Story Timers serve in library branches offering developmentally appropriate stories and activities for young children. Training and mentoring are provided.
