Purpose

  In this lesion, students will be able to read technical material in order to better comprehend articles, textbooks, manuals, set of directions and other technical material that they may encounter in the workplace.

   

The activities for this section follow the SQ3-R reading method which is outlined below and can be adapted to many other uses.


SQ3-R

 
  • Survey the entire article, section, or chapter to be read by looking at each page, reading the headings or topic sentences. Examine all graphs, chars, and illustrations carefully. Study all the pictures and carefully read the captions.
  • Write Questions that you expect to be answered from a close reading of the entire assignment.
  • Read the entire article, section, or chapter that was just surveyed and questioned. Reread difficult sections until understanding is achieved. Use the dictionary or glossary.
  • Recite: Once the entire section is read and comprehended, answer the questions composed earlier. Avoid copying answers from the test.
  • Review: Handle this as a true review of the material to check for comprehension, or use as the assessment piece of the lesson: summarize, tell a friend what the reading was about, or do any assigned activity to test the comprehension.

Students will be able to:

  • read technical material in order to better comprehend articles, textbooks, manuals, sets of directions and other technical material
  • use teamwork to arrive at comprehension of a large piece of technical reading
  • use the jigsaw method to arrive at comprehension of a large piece of technical reading
