Guidelines and Standards for Businesses Partnering with Schools

 Promoting
products
or services

Partnership programs may not be used to  promote products or services of the business partner. Business partners and their employees, however, may be recognized publicly and in print (newsletters and menus) for their involvement and volunteerism within the school system. A school bulletin board, for example, is an appropriate vehicle to recognize partnership activities and provides information about the business/organization.

Use of alcoholic
beverages or
tobacco

Mid-Maryland does not condone the use of alcoholic beverages or tobacco in the presence of students. Businesses that sell alcoholic beverages are to be carefully screened. The goals and objectives of the partnership should not include any activities where alcoholic beverages are used in the presence of students. In some cases, the location of a "bar" or "lounge" may disqualify a business from joining the Educational Partnerships program.

Work tasks for
the business
during the
school day

In many partnership programs, students volunteer to assist the business with special projects. However, partnerships will not be condoned where students are used to complete work tasks for the business during the school day, except in cases of work experience programs. For questions or concerns, contact the Office of Career Connections in Baltimore County at

  Displaying
company logo

Business partners are permitted to give items to students with their logo displayed. However, businesses should not promote themselves in a singular category as being the "best" business of that type. For instance, a bank may share the importance of savings, but should not promote itself as the best and only banking institution.

 Disclosing
business partners

Solicitors requesting names of business partners must contact the schools for this information. It is up to the discretion of the school-based partnership committee whether or not to share contact names and phone numbers with others.

 Etc.

Additional limitations may be established by school-based committees.
